Prism: a light-routing colour puzzle
Prism is a quiet puzzle about steering light. A lamp fires one white beam across a dark grid, and somewhere along its path sits a piece of glass that changes everything: a prism, which takes white light apart into three colours. It has a front and a back, and it only works on light that meets its flat face head on. Red then carries straight on, yellow bends away to the left and blue to the right, and from that moment you are not routing one beam but three. Around the board, gems wait in the dark. Each one wants a particular colour and stays closed until it gets exactly that. The board arrives empty, and you are handed a small number of pieces to put on it. Where the light turns is entirely your decision.
How to play
Tap any empty square to lay a piece there. Keep tapping the same square to turn the piece, change it, and finally take it away again. The beams redraw the instant you do, so you can always see where the light is going and which gems are still dark.
- Mirrors turn light: a mirror sitting as / sends a beam travelling east up to the north, and one travelling west down to the south. Turned to \ it does the opposite.
- Splitters do both: a splitter turns half of a beam and lets the rest carry straight on, so one beam becomes two. That is how a single colour reaches more than one gem.
- You have only so many: mirrors and splitters are counted out separately and shown at the top of the board, and a piece you have spent leaves its empty slot behind. Run out and you have to lift something before you can lay it somewhere better.
- The prism has a front: it only works on light that hits its flat side head on. Light striking a slanted side just scatters and is lost, so your first job on every board is getting the white beam round to the side that works.
- Colours mix like paint, not like light: red and yellow make orange, red and blue make purple, and yellow and blue make green. Two beams have to arrive at the same gem together.
- Read the stones: every gem is the colour it is waiting for, and sits dark until it gets it. A dark ruby wants red. A dark orange stone wants red and yellow arriving together.
- Blocks eat light: the solid squares are opaque. Any beam that reaches one stops there.
- Undo or Restart: step back one move, or put the whole board back the way you found it, at any time.
Your progress saves automatically, so you always come back to the level where you left off.
Why it is clever
Nothing in Prism is hidden. The beams are always drawn, so the board is a live picture of your own reasoning: lay a piece and you can watch a whole branch of light swing across the grid and either find its gem or sail past it. What makes it hard is not that anything is concealed, it is that an empty board offers far more places to put a piece than you have pieces.
The depth arrives with the mixing. A gem that wants a single colour only needs one route to work out. A gem that wants orange needs two separate beams to arrive at the same square, and until both are right it shows you nothing but a faint wash of the colour it is already getting. That is the part you cannot solve one piece at a time.
Tips
- Start at the lamp and get the white beam into the prism. Nothing else can be right until it is.
- Work outward from the prism, one colour at a time. Red carries straight on, so it is usually the easiest to read.
- Count your pieces before you start placing. If a gem needs two colours, that is at least two pieces committed.
- Use a splitter where one colour has to reach two gems, and save your mirrors for the last stop on each branch.
- For a mixed gem, solve the harder of its two beams first, then bring the second in to meet it.

Is every level solvable? Yes. Each board is built around a working light path first, and that answer is re-simulated and checked before the level is ever served to you.
What happens when two beams cross? Beams that cross at right angles pass through each other unchanged. Beams only combine when they arrive at the same gem, or run along the same stretch of the board.
